Classifying Matter Project

Task

Your group is to locate evidence or create an experiment that demonstrates your knowledge of elements, compounds, mixtures, solutions, physical changes, and chemical changes. You will be taking digital pictures of what you find and documenting the steps needed to create your experiments.

Process

1.  Brainstorm examples with your group that demonstrate your knowledge of each concept from chapter one.

2.  Complete the planning guide that describes your plans for each topic.

3.  Prepare a list of supplies that each group member will be required to bring to school.

4.  Perform each experiment that demonstrates the topics outline above.

5.  Document each step by taking accurate notes and with a digital camera.

6.  Assemble notes and photos into a PowerPoint presentation.

7.  Present completed group projects with the class.

    Conclusion

As a result of this project you have gained some additional knowledge about the process of classifying matter while working collaboratively in a group environment.  In addition, you have been introduced to the PowerPoint software and have utilized it as an effective presentation tool.

    Content Standards

This project is used to evaluate the following South Dakota Content Standards:
    Grade 5  Science
    Goal 2: Physical Science
Indicator1 : Describe structures and properties of matter in various states and forms.
Benchmark 2-explore that matter is made up of elements and molecules. (example: carbon dioxide, water)

    Indicator 2:
Describe various physical and chemical changes in matter.
Benchmark 1- identify changes that can occur in the physical properties of the ingredients in a solution. (example: sugar dissolving in water)
    Benchmark 2- explore solutions
Benchmark 5- explain how materials made by chemically combining two or more substances may have properties that differ from the original materials.
